During six-week courses, Halifax Regional Speed Skating Club’s certified coaches class students into small groups by ability level and teach them to master ice-bound indoor terrain. Using game-based approaches, skate scholars guide novices to learn snowman intimidation techniques such as marching or push-off approaches. Those with basic skate-walking abilities learn to push and glide, balance on a single leg, and slip into their skating stride. Intermediate students expound on basic skills as they learn right and left T-pushes and beginner and circle crossovers, and the most advanced skaters hone gliding, edge control, sculling, pivots, and stops without the aid of pillow bumpers or zamboni escort fleets.

All students should arrive clad in their own CSA-approved hockey helmet, padded gloves or mittens, and kneepads, and can carve with single-blade, hockey, or figure skates. While this course teaches beginning skating techniques, classes in speed skating or advanced ice-sonnet carving are available following course completion. Halifax Regional Speed Skating Club draws on a 40-year legacy and currently gathers players ranging from beginners up to provincial professional team members.

We are really pleased with the amount of extra hands available to help the children who are not too steady. The instructors are really positive and have kept the pace fun with some games and are continually encouraging them to improve!

My grandson loved it!...He was happy, and he's not one to particularly enjoy 'trying' something new.
