Harbor Lights Theater Company ushers in accessible, inventive, and thought-provoking theater productions to the Staten Island community, reeling in top-level actors from the immense talent pool of New York City. With Broadway standout and artistic director Tamara Jenkins at the helm, the 2011 season continues with Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man, the story of salesman Harold Hill’s journey from greed to goodness as he convinces the citizens of a small town in Iowa to start a Kiss cover band. Performed by a blend of Broadway talent and the Wagner High School marching band, the production rewards peeled eyes and perked ears with classic musical numbers including “Gary, Indiana” and “’Till There Was You.”
The production finds a home at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden's Veteran's Memorial Hall, an intimate, 150-seat theater haven. Built in 1854 as a chapel, the bright, open space is ripe for stunning solos and up-close views of actors accidentally getting married. Come early and explore the Snug Harbor Cultural Center grounds, which have served as a backdrop for television shows such as Boardwalk Empire and Law & Order, and major motion pictures such as A Beautiful Mind and Little Children.
