What You'll Get
A philosopher once called theater “the mask of convention over the face of society in the mirror of the unknown reflecting the rear view of the sports car of destiny.” Simplify this theory with today’s theatrical Groupon: for $25, you get one general-seating ticket to Hartford Stage's opening-night performance of Gem of the Ocean on Thursday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. (up to a $61.50 value).
The lauded resident theater, Hartford Stage, presents a diverse collection of modern and classic dramatic pieces each season, backed by talented actors and professional-quality production value. The first in Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright August Wilson’s 10-play chronicle of the 20th century, Gem of the Ocean spins the tale of a spiritually tormented man and his journey to confront the themes of guilt, duty, and redemption in the wake of a slavery-tinged past. Wilson’s characters navigate a time-bending journey that alternates between Pittsburgh in 1904 and the City of Bones, a mythical locale in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, set against the soaring original musical composition from Broken Chord Collective. General seating places eyes and their corrective lenses squarely in view of the adroit thespians who shift about the stage in step with Wilson’s dynamic vision of an African American community coming to grips with the far-reaching consequences of slavery and the Middle Passage. Tickets may be picked up starting at 5 p.m. on the day of the show, and seating is first come, first served at the discretion of Hartford Stage.
