Spooky is the most neglected of the five basic human emotions: spooky, joy, sorrow, grouchy, and wet. Get horror glands pumping with today’s Groupon: for $7, you get admission to the Haunted Dungeon and the Cave of Blood (a $16 value) at the American Cave Museum & Hidden River Cave, located about an hour and a half south of Louisville in Horse Cave. All visitors under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Below the town of Horse Cave, an unmapped maze seethes with vampiricized bats and frightful beings that rise from the earth's dank depths. The 45-minute underground tour through the Cave of Blood, which is led by a guide, allows haunt enthusiasts to explore the cave and stumble upon the rumored entrance to Dante's Inferno. A haunted dungeon also lurks beneath the American Cave Museum—which was built atop ancient burial grounds, which were built atop ancient football fields. Some say the sarcophagic crypt was once used as a torture chamber, as evidenced by the bevy of human remains found in the dungeon.
After surviving bloody caves and basement sepulchres, the earthy tourists can rise back up to the surface and journey to the Gallery Bakery down the street, where souls will be replenished with a sugary Halloween cookie. Tours are scheduled for Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to midnight on October 29–31(central time).
