What You'll Get

Choose from Three Options

  • $17 for a self-guided sunset kayak trip for one ($27 value)
  • $31 for a self-guided sunset canoe trip for two ($54 value)

During sunset trips, paddlers take a two-hour excursion into the Proud Lake wilderness area along the Huron River, recently declared a National Water Trail by the National Park Service. Staff will equip customers with everything they need to enjoy the scenic voyage, including directions to a waterfall that spills out of Proud Lake. Call for available trip times.

  • $158 for a 2015 season canoe or kayak pass ($300 value)

Season passes are valid for unlimited use of one canoe or one kayak at Heavner Canoe Rentals’ launch locations for one year from the date of purchase.

The kayaking and canoeing season typically runs from April through October, weather permitting. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, trips may be booked seven days a week, with weekend-only bookings available at other times. Because trips take place in Michigan state parks and recreation areas, a state recreation passport is required, which may be purchased onsite.

About Heavner Canoe & Kayak Rental

After buying their first canoe in 1942, Chester and Stella Heavner were hooked. So were their friends. After constantly loaning out their red-canvas Old Town canoe, the pair invested in two more and started charging a nominal rental fee. In 1953, they made it official with a patch of riverfront property, eight canoes, and a trailer.

Today, Heavner Canoe & Kayak Rental is run by Chester and Stella’s eldest son, Alan. He and his staff manage an inventory of more than 200 canoes and kayaks, which they rent at three locations along the Huron River.
