What started as a modest mom-and-pop Indian food operation near the Devon Street neighborhood has blossomed into Hema’s Kitchen, a two-location eatery with a devout following. Positive press from WTTW’s Check, Please! raised the restaurant’s profile, though owner and chef Hema Potla still makes each visit a personal experience despite the increase in foot traffic. She circulates the dining room on most nights, greeting new faces with just as much enthusiasm as she does for her regulars. Hema picked up many of her culinary skills in her hometown of Hyderabad, India, and the rest she gleaned from her late husband, Sam. In the kitchen, chefs grind fresh herbs and spices, creating the rich seasonings that color the menu’s subcontinental specialties, which include tandoor oven-cooked meats, spicy vindaloos, and two-dozen vegetarian options.
