What You'll Get
Unknown to most, actors are international spies in training, dutifully perfecting the arts of costumed infiltration and subduing attackers with touching romantic-comedy sketches. Witness agents in action with today's Groupon: for $22, you get one ticket to a Capitol Steps performance on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. at the Orpheum Theatre (up to a $52 value). Seating is first-come, first-served.
Spanning 30 years of satirical song and skit performances, the Capitol Steps pokes friendly fun at the same governing body that employs its performers. The 30-member cast, including 10-year Capitol Hill veteran and former lobbyist Mark Eaton, delights audiences with politically themed song parodies and relevant comedy sketches, with material updated on a daily basis to reflect political-figure high jinks and Post-it-note constitutional amendments. Since 1981, the Capitol Steps have recorded more than 30 albums and have been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, and NPR's Politics Takes a Holiday broadcast specials.
The laugh-elected show serenades audiences at the historical Orpheum Theatre, a 2,579-seat theater opened in 1921. Originally designed by Kirchoff and Rose, the Beaux Arts–style building features Pompeian friezes and a 15-foot-high, 2,000-pound chandelier to add classical taste and bestow thrilling exit opportunities for buccaneer stagehands.
