Race (don't loot) your way to $12,345.67. With today's Groupon, $58 gets entry for you and a friend in a San Francisco urban scavenger race on July 25 with High Trek Adventure ($100 value‚ $50 per person the day before the race).
Teams of two (this Groupon is good for two people) walk, skip, or run through unknown nooks of San Francisco gathering and solving clues that lead one lucky team to a $300 prize. The top three teams of sharp sprinters are entered into the Trek Nationals in Las Vegas, where the grand prize is the awkward but substantial sum of $12,345.67. Even if you don't get the green, you're bound to get something, especially if you and your partner dress in a two-person horse costume—the pair with the best uniforms gets a $50 gift certificate to a local store.Top family and top senior-citizen teams get gift certificates too.
The San Francisco High Trek race, which starts and ends at Roe Restaurant (651 Howard St.), takes you through North Beach, SOMA, the Castro, Union Square, and some top-secret spots. It takes about an hour and a half for the fastest teams. You can bring just about anything: computer, GPS, lucky rabbit's foot, compass, maps to the buried treasure of Billy the Kidd, etc. It won't help you if you're not quick-witted enough to solve High Trek's crafty clues. Here's a sample from the 2007 San Francisco race:
Q: Geoff Rush won his only Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role in this 1990s film. This TREKpoint is located within a half mile of the Armitage EL stop.
If you can figure that one out, you just might be good enough to win the $12,345.67.
- I heart High Trek Adventure! I participated in the Seattle race and had an absolute blast! I live in Seattle and the challenge brought me to areas within the city that I've never even heard of before; cute parks in the International District in particular! – Matthew F.
- High Trek is the perfect mix of fun and competition. Its [sic] an ideal way to spend a day with your friends and to break the daily routine. It really is a one of a kind experience and about as much fun as I've ever had in a day.– Jim K.
- We had a blast! I recommend that you try it once if you're a big fan of TAR [The Amazing Race]. – big n.
