What You'll Get

_Jump to: Reviews Packing List_

Race (don’t loot) your way to a $12,345.67 grand prize. With today’s Groupon, $50 buys entry for you and a friend in an East Bay urban scavenger race on August 29 with High Trek Adventure. That’s a huge discount off the normal price tag ($80 for two people until 8/9, $100 until 8/28, and $120 on race day).

On race day, teams of two will walk, skip, or run (highly recommended) through the unknown nooks of Oakland, Berkeley, and the rest of the East Bay, gathering and solving clues that will lead one lucky team to a $300 prize. The three teams with the fastest legs and sharpest puzzle-solving skills will also win free entry in the Championship Race in Las Vegas on November 14 (normally a $100 entry fee). In Vegas, East Bay’s winners will have a shot at the grand prize: the awkward but substantial sum of $12,345.67.

Even if you don’t steal a top spot and the chance to go to Sin City, you have a fair chance of winning something in the East Bay battle, especially if you and your partner dress in a two-person horse costume (the pair with the best uniforms gets a $50 gift certificate to a local store). The top family (18 and under) and senior-citizen teams win gift certificates too. No matter what, you’ll walk away from an afternoon of exciting competition knowing more than ever about the oddities and landmarks of the city.

The East Bay High Trek race, which begins and ends at Lanesplitter Pub & Pizza (2033 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley) will take you throughout the East Bay to top-secret spots you’ll discover on race day. The competition begins at noon, and the speediest teams will finish in about an hour and a half. As for supplies, you can bring just about anything except your own transportation: GPS, computer, lucky rabbit’s foot, compass, map to the buried treasure of Billy the Kidd, etc. But take note: even the most high-tech gadgets won’t help you if you’re not quick-witted enough to solve High Trek’s crafty clues. Here’s a sample clue from the 2007 San Francisco race:

Q: How sinister…Part of this three-word TREKpoint is often mistaken for the capitol of the Land of Enchantment. You’ll find it on the street that shares its name with the military faction from the North that fought to end slavery in the US (among other issues). Head west from Van Ness and it’s on your right.

If you can figure that one out, you just might be on track to take home the $12,345.67.

Though there aren’t web reviews for the East Bay race in particular, Yelpers across California give High Trek high marks. The race creators get an average of 4.5 stars on the Walnut Creek page and a five-star review in San Diego. Here’s what racers say: > * I participated in the Seattle race and had an absolute blast! I live in Seattle and the challenge brought me to areas within the city that I’ve never even heard of before – Matthew F. > * High Trek is the perfect mix of fun and competition. Its [sic] an ideal way to spend a day with your friends and to break the daily routine…about as much fun as I’ve ever had in a day. – Jim K. > * We had a blast! I recommend that you try it once if you’re a big fan of TAR [The Amazing Race]. – big n.
