Hillcrest Hero Bubble Soccer Tournament 2016

During games of bubble soccer, players strap on transparent, inflated bubble suits that leave only their legs exposed, allowing them to safely bounce off one another as they work their ways towards victory—which looks a lot like soccer goals. The 32-team, double-elimination Hillcrest Hero Bubble Soccer Tournament benefits Hillcrest Transitional Housing, which works with homeless adults, families, and teenagers. Spectators can take in the action as well as between-game entertainment by bringing nonperishable food or pantry items to use as admission.

Hillcrest Transitional Housing

Getting families from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days sounds like an insurmountable goal. But Hillcrest Transitional Housing, which operates in Kansas and Missouri, has achieved success with 95% of its program's graduates over 30 years. Here's how it works: in exchange for rent- and utility-free housing, residents are required to work full time, obey the program guidelines, and attend classes in life skills, employment, and budgeting. This focus on gradual self-reliance moves individuals and families with children off the streets to transitional housing to living on their own. (Youth aged 16–20 participate in an intensive 21-month program to help them realize educational and career goals in addition to securing stable housing.)

Hillcrest's residential programs and supportive services endure thanks to volunteers, grants, and donations. The organization also raises funds through county galas, Bubble Soccer tournaments, and foodie events.
