It's already common knowledge that pizza can fuel a party. But what if it could fuel a movement? At Hillside Pizza, co-founders and owners Craig White and Bob Lindner want it to do just that. That's why they initially began Hillside Pizza as a fundraising business out of a community kitchen in Western Massachusetts. Their focus: raise funds) for local organizations with good-for-you pizzas brimming with organic ingredients from local farms. Their fledgling business worked so well they opened three establishments, all of which adhere to sustainable business and agricultural practices such as utilizing organic farming methods, composting, using sugarcane fiber for their pizza boxes, and filling their spaces with handmade booths courtesy of local student craftsmen.
In their years on the job, they've helped area organizations—including schools and charities—raise more than $315,000, earning them the 2014 Haas Entrepreneur of the Year Award, a prestigious community award named for a local entrepreneur invested in his home area.
