Children 5 and younger enter free with an adult. Ages 6-12 may use this Groupon for admission, tickets for those ages regularly cost $5.
Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, the 126-year-old Squirrel Cage Jail is one of only three remaining rotary jails in the world, and was in continuous use from its construction in 1885 until retirement in 1969. Designed to provide maximum security with minimum jailer attention and median outbreaks of musical numbers, the jail consists of three floors of pie-slice-shaped cells stacked within a rotating cage. Guided tours and historical exhibits teach visitors about the retired reformatory, where the signatures, release dates, and favorite bundt-cake recipes of the jail’s most infamous prisoners remain scratched in cell walls. According to historical-society staff and paranormal researchers who have examined the facility, the jail also frequently entertains otherworldly guests, including a mysterious gray-garbed girl spotted inside a locked cell. Guests should call ahead to schedule a tour.
