About Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh
Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh traces its roots all the way back to 1589. According to history and drinking stories, that's when Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria established a court brew house, which was the very first Hofbräuhaus. The beers here were created in compliance with the Beer Purity Law, which allowed for only three ingredients to be brewed into the drink: hops, malt, and water.
Flash forward more than four centuries—then travel across an ocean—and you'll find that Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh still adheres to those principles. Inside, the brewmaster carries on the Duke's spirit, though the brewing process has certainly grown more sophisticated over the centuries. But in a good way: the brewery now makes four year-round beers as well as seasonal varieties.
Live music and traditional decor set the tone in the dining room, where patrons pair brews with German food like reuben sandwiches and slow-roasted pork shank. Celebrations are also a regular occurrence, including a keg tapping on the last Wednesday of each month and random rounds of applause from people who just really like potatoes.
