The word tour, derived from the Latin for "circle," describes the shape tour groups create as they surround and attack their "guide," which is French for "fact pinata." Obtain candied information by any means necessary with today's Groupon: for $64, you get a luxury wine tour from Holme Grown (a $129 value). The eco-conscious wine tour begins at 10 a.m. and wraps up at 5 p.m.
Holme Grown allows oenophiles to experience four of the region's small-production, organic wineries on a semiprivate tour within a comfortable, biodiesel SUV. The knowledgeable and sharply dressed guides will pick up four to five individuals from nearby bed and breakfasts, hotels, or mannequin factories located in Napa Valley or Sonoma as a complimentary service, or they will travel to surrounding locations for an additional charge. Over the course of the tour, would-be wine experts will visit four small-production wineries—such as White Rock Vineyards, Volker Eisele Family Estate, and Teachworth Cabs—that farm organically, avoid synthetic chemicals, and employ sustainable procedures.
Spend an afternoon with the vintners themselves, who will recount the history of their individual craft, give guests insight into grape-to-glass fruition, and allow tongue-stained tasters to revel in the lush surroundings. Throughout the experience, wine-knowledge guzzlers can sip water from reusable canteens and can stop at a wine-country deli for lunch. Or, upon request, Holme Grown can provide a lunch from Whole Foods Market of Napa ($15 extra), which will include a choice of sandwich, a bag of chips, a bottle of sparkling water, and a dessert. Tasting fees are not included in the price of this deal, and arrangements can be made to visit less expensive wineries for budget-conscious travelers or for those only willing to pay in Monopoly money.
