One of the world's oldest beverages, beer predates even dodo-egg milkshakes and mammoth-flavored Capri Sun. Concoct a modern version of this ancient brew with today's Groupon: for $20, you get an introductory brewing class for two at Home Brews & Gardens (a $40 value). The approximately two-hour sessions are held on the second and last Saturdays of every month beginning at noon.
The amiable, well-versed staff of Home Brews & Gardens supplies students with all the fermentation information needed to craft home-brewed suds. In each class, up to 20 participants learn how to construct their own mash tun, a vessel that converts grain starch into the sugar that leads to fermentation and the hyper grins found on the bottoms of grateful pint glasses. Suds students will learn how to properly clean and sanitize the container, then study the extraction process of beer ingredients such as hops, grain, barley, and malted-milk balls.
Crafters in training will examine the batch-brewing process from its inception to its conclusion and have the chance to sample home-brewed sips culled from the instructor's own supply. Students depart with an info-stuffed packet that includes the beer recipe used in class and helpful tidbits on making kegs out of old garden hoses and broken toasters.
