Sight, the workhorse of the five senses, puts in too many hours keeping man from falling in manholes. Reward the most overworked sense with today's Groupon: for $5, you get a one-day pass to the Honolulu Academy of Arts, located next to Thomas Square (up to a $10 value; admission is always free for kids 12 and younger and $5 for seniors, students, and military members).
The state's only dedicated art museum accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Honolulu Academy of Arts is an 83-year-old bulwark of Honolulu's cultural community. The Academy's massive collection represents millennia of artistic achievement and creative work from Asia, Europe, and the Americas, from the oils of Monet to an approximately 4,500-year-old marble sculpture presumed to have been carved entirely by karate chop. Cruise your corneas around exhibitions such as Very Funny!: Satire and Subversion in 18th- and 19th-Century Prints (running through January 23) and Four Thousand Years of Southeast Asian Art (running through January 9), the latter of which features about 150 pieces from Thailand and Cambodia, almost none of them Elvis-themed. Adults can partake in hour long guided tours free with admission, or opt to embark on a solitary artistic odyssey by downloading the Academy's complimentary audio tour.
- The collection is amazing and the grounds make it even more stunning. – hiloprgal, Zagat
- We recently toured the Academy of Arts on our Oahu visit earlier this month. We had been there several times before, but never get tired of going there. The building itself is a treasure, with its many patios, beautiful gardens, wrought iron gates and interesting statuary. – Giovana, TripAdvisor
