A tortilla makes a handy mouse pad, an acceptable patch for stiff denim jeans, and, if you draw a face on it, an ideal companion on fishing trips. But there are many other uses for it, as today's Groupon proves: for $15, you get $30 worth of Tex-Mex cuisine and drinks at Hop Devil Grill on St. Mark's Place.
Hop Devil Grill serves up quick, freshly made Tex-Mex edibles in a vibrant bar-grill environment. Spice up a plain evening by starting off with an appetizer of fried plantains ($5.99) served with tangy mango sauce, or move on to the plant-power of portabello-and-spinach quesadillas ($8.99). Both the grazing herbivore and vicious carnivore sides of any omnivore will enjoy the Santa Fe bowl salad ($9.99), a healthful layer cake of Cajun chicken, Monterey Jack, tomatoes, southwest succotash, and rice over rich greens in a peppercorn-ranch dressing. Entrees such as the baja fish fajitas ($15.99) will perk up even the most depressed palate, while Hop Devil's authentic street-style tacos can be ordered individually or as a plate for a street-food experience that lacks aggressive breakdancers demanding that you wear a bib. Plates come with two tacos side-kicked by Mexican rice and refried beans; the tacos include fillings such as chorizo, chicken mole, grilled shrimp, and more (starting at $3 individually and $8.99 for a plate).
The lively décor at Hop Devil adds a festive spirit to the restaurant experience, with blue walls decked out in chalkboards and kitsch, and intimately gathered wooden tables. Fly solo and mingle at the bar, which is stocked with a huge variety of draft and craft beers including Lakefront IPA and Dogfish Head Aprihop, or bring along a gang of personal paparazzi to add at least three reels of film to the restaurant's Flickr stream.
