Theater, like a good therapist, can uncover the heart of the human condition with a few hours of introspection and a handful of musical numbers. Enjoy the therapeutic effects of live art with today’s Groupon: for $22, you get two orchestra seats to a Saturday performance of the Hope Summer Repertory Theatre 2011 season at DeWitt Theatre in Holland (up to a $44 value). Reservations for one of the following performances, which all begin at 8 p.m., must be made by June 13, 2011:
- Children of Eden on June 18, July 16, or July 30
- Taking Steps on June 25
- Return to the Forbidden Planet on July 9 or August 6
- I Remember Mama on July 23 or August 13
Hope Summer Repertory Theatre's vibrant troupe of more than 100 company participants exhibit their fluency in staged expressions with a variety of plays and musicals. Furnish uncultured glove compartments with playbills from any of four features in the theater's 40th-anniversary season. The musical Children of Eden, penned by John Caird and put to music by Stephen Schwartz, springs from the themes of Genesis, contemplating the contentious relationships between parents and progeny. Meanwhile, I Remember Mama furthers the familial theme with a melody-free telling of the story of Norwegian immigrants struggling in San Francisco.
Performances are held in the DeWitt Theatre on the campus of Hope College, which is located roughly a half-hour west of Grand Rapids. Stage cravers are granted seats in orchestra sections B through E, or with the actual orchestra if they bring their own flugelhorns.
