Hopocan Gardens is known for two things: its chicken dinner and its addictive hot sauce. Though both have gained massive popularity for over 70 years, neither was ever intended for customers. The restaurant originally served its chicken and tomato-rice mixture (what is known today as hot sauce) to employees only. A few curious customers asked to try the chicken and sauce combination and a classic meal was born. Now the restaurant breads and fries its Ohio-raised chicken alongside fresh cut french fries, cole slaw, and the spicy sauce. The chicken comes cut in the traditional barberton style—a quirky, efficient method originally devised to help families during the depression avoid waste. The meat can be enjoyed white, all dark, or breast and drummette combinations.
