Without beer, baseball would have remained an obscure 19th-century fad, the human race would look a lot less hot, and most best friends would be no fun at all. Celebrate beer's many historic contributions with today's Groupon. For $10, you get $25 worth of craft beer and pizza at Horny Goat Hideaway in Bay View.

Since its nondescript name never seems to grab anyone's attention, the Horny Goat has distinguished itself with six craft-brewed beers ($4) served fresh from the tap. A farmhouse-style Exposed Ale or a hoppy, amber-hued Hopped Up n' Horny American Pale Ale starts things off light before the complexity of a golden Belgian-style wheat beer ($4.50/bottle) accented by coriander and kettle-boiled orange peel, or a toasted, medium-bodied Vienna-style Red Vixen. Save room for a dessert of Stacked Milk Stout, a smooth, creamy, and slightly chocolate-sweet traditional English stout. The indecisive can sample all six brews for $7.

Because nothing goes with beer like pizza—other than sports, friends, video games, medieval sestinas, breathing, yoga, and more beer—the Horny Goat pizza menu thoughtfully suggests food pairings for each of its quirky quaffs. Complement a Red Vixen with a thin-crust barbecue pizza ($12.95), or put out the Inferno (pepperoni, giardiniera, red peppers, and pesto pizza, $9.95) with an Exposed. Choose from more than 10 pies on the menu and pile on the add-ons for $.50 each. Everyone gets to use one Groupon, so buy extras and bring enough buddies to form a volleyball team.

Reviews

The Horny Goat Brewing Company placed fourth on CityVoter for Best Brewery 2009. The Business Journal previewed the grand opening of the Horny Goat Hideaway, and the A.V. Club conducted an informative interview. Meanwhile, the Bay View Compass and Milwaukee magazine praise the food and décor:

  • The Hideaway kept the building’s brick interior, exposed steel girders and a mezzanine overlooking the main bar. There’s a state-of-the-art brewing station (for seasonals and specialties) in a glassed-in room across from the bar. Selections include the Stacked Milk Stout (light and sweet enough for stout newcomers) and Horny Blonde (I think I’ve heard this phrase before in a punchline). The food is highlighted by Hog Wings – tiny, delectable pork shanks that don’t do much for the libido, but plenty for the palate. – Dan Murphy, Milwaukee
  • I ordered the Gobbler...Instead of the ineluctable ennui of the indifferent tortilla or faux ciabatta and focaccia that typifies wraps and panini, the sandwich was enveloped in a thin multigrain flatbread grilled to perfection, just enough to inspire the grains to subtly declare themselves...It was tasty, light, and served with chips and a pickle. My dining companion ordered the quarter-pound hamburger that he said had good flavor...He elected waffle fries that were fresh (clean oil) and golden-crisp on the outside and moist, but not gummy, inside. – Katherine Keller, Bay View Compass

Horny Goat Brew Pub

Horny Goat Brew Pub crafts a menu of comfort fare and American fare with its private label of craft microbrews, Horny Goat Brewing Company. The recently built BFT (Big Fun Tent) spans 14,600 square feet and boasts a 20'x20' stage, a 10'x16' flat-screen video wall, and lounge furniture. The heated complex also includes sand-volleyball courts. When the aggressive yelps of an ignored appetite prove too bothersome, the eatery can provide empty stomachs with a Loaded Tots appetizer, topped with beer-cheese sauce and bacon, and the pulled-pork sandwich, served with apple coleslaw. On Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., the brunch menu fulfills diners' desires with savory options such as the Eggs Benny—an english muffin, canadian bacon, and hollandaise—or the crisp belgian waffle, served with strawberries and whipped cream.
