What You'll Get
Unlike most American homes today, cabins don’t usually include a den with an entertainment system, a garage filled with rare paintings by Matisse, or a storage closet functioning as a shrine to the ladies of The View. Spend some simplified time in a pared-down abode with today’s Groupon to Horse Creek Resort at Sheridan Lake in Rapid City. Choose between the following options:
- For $15, you get $30 worth of American fare at Horse Creek Inn.
- For $230, you get a three-night, four-day stay in a one-bedroom cabin and a full-day pontoon boat rental (a $460 value).
The sublimely scenic Horse Creek Resort at Sheridan Lake houses road-trip refugees and traveling patriot posses en route to Mount Rushmore, which JFK recommended all Americans visit if they can't make it to the moon. With today’s deal you can commit to a days-long retreat or briefly sample the fruits of the Badlands’ culinary history. Go for the first option and browse the Horse Creek Inn’s hearty menu before settling on a carnivorous feast. Try the 16-ounce T-bone steak ($18.95) or oscars tournedos, twin 4-ounce fillets that, like most sets of twins, finish each others’ sentences and show up covered in asparagus with béarnaise and hollandaise sauce ($21.95). Meatless options, such as the fettuccine prima vera ($14.95), are also available.
Option two gets you and up to three family members, friends, or scorned Celebrity Apprentice contestants three nights and four days in a one-bedroom cabin (a $90 value/night), plus a day out on the waters of Sheridan Lake. Several Black Hills National Forest trails wind through the Horse Creek property, so you can plan a group hiking trip to take in some of the lush, green land before setting out on your pontoon excursion from Sheridan Lake Marina (a $190 value). The newly refurbished cabins have water, electricity, and free Internet. Although there is no air conditioning, the Black Hills maintains a naturally cool climate largely powered by the icy glare of Teddy Roosevelt, who bitterly complained that he “hated posing for mountains” the whole time sculptors were dynamiting his face into the rock.

About Horse Creek Resort at Sheridan Lake
Secluded amid Black Hills National Forest, Horse Creek Resort at Sheridan Lake is a quiet, rustic getaway. Rugged hiking trails wend through the surrounding woods, leading to rolling hills, grassy meadows, and sun-dappled clearings. A half mile away at Sheridan Lake, you can go fishing, boating, or kayaking in sparkling waters ringed by miles of forested shoreline. You can rent boats at the onsite marina and pick up any essentials, such as bait and tackle and phrasebooks that help you communicate with local mermaids.
The resort’s wooden cabins and RV campsites have easy access to both the lake and forest. Most feature fully stocked kitchens, but there’s also an onsite restaurant that serves prime rib and USDA Choice steaks. You can also request a barbecue grill if you want to grill out in your backyard.
