Greg Henry "The Salsaman" leads drop-in salsa, bachata & merengue classes & kids learn Latin swing & ballroom partner dance

Until Thomas Edison’s patent on walking expired in 1931, Americans were forced to create elaborate dances to get from place to place. Relive a previous era’s only legal means of locomotion with today’s Groupon to Hot Salsa Hawaii, valid at locations in Aiea and Honolulu. Choose between the following options:

  • For $40, you get a 10-class punch card for salsa, merengue, or bachata dance lessons (an $80 value).
  • For $55, you get two months of kids' Latin dance classes (a $110 value).

At Hot Salsa Hawaii, Greg Henry "The Salsaman" and his staff of 17 instructors guide novice steppers through the basics behind Latin dance and help refine already ravishing repertoires. With a 10-class punch card, students can drop in on any of Hot Salsa Hawaii’s regularly scheduled classes and bring a friend or rhythmically inclined robot to share in the experience. The school hosts group lessons every day of the week in three sweat-intensive styles: salsa, merengue, and bachata. Beginner classes focus on the Fab 5 dance moves of salsa, including the basic step and the cross-body lead. Intermediate dancers can advance beyond the basic patterns to learn more intricate feats of kinesthetic prowess, such as dancing through hoops of fire.

Kids' lessons divide their time between Hot Salsa Hawaii's Aiea and Honolulu locations, with courses allotted for kids age 2–10 on Saturdays at 8 a.m. in Honolulu, kids 10 and older on Saturdays at 9 a.m. in Honolulu, and kids of all ages on Sundays at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. in Aiea. Youngsters take in the twisting steps of Latin swing, with routines of ballroom partner dancing to round out the mix. Lessons culminate with holiday performances, in which junior shimmiers showcase their moves and best conifer impressions.

About Hot Salsa

The son of a Californian flamenco dancer, Greg “The Salsaman” Henry was captivated by dancing early on. At the age of 3, he joined in on performances with his mother’s dance troupe. Years later he went on to found the Hot Salsa Dance Company, which puts on interactive latin-dance shows throughout Hawaii and California. Henry and other company members also lead the company’s instructional arm, Hot Salsa Hawaii, teaching group classes to beginning and intermediate dancers.

In these classes, you can learn the basic steps of Dominican Republic–style merengue, a more energetic version than its Haitian counterpart. You can also work toward mastering the sideways footwork of the bachata. Classes are limited in size to ensure that each student gets plenty of attention from the instructor.
