Tucked into the island’s quiet bay of Avalon, Hotel Catalina lavishes visitors with Victorian surroundings, seaside views, and quaint accommodations. Bright-white rocking chairs on the front porch usher visitors off for a mid-afternoon nap while gusts of incoming sea air serenade the nose. Mountain-view rooms boast untrammeled views of the nearby mountainside and feature 32-inch flat-screen TVs, plus a soft and buoyant bed with a dark-stained wood headboard. Guests wake to complimentary cups of Kona coffee, tea, and baked goods fresh from the Avalon Bake Shop. After a quick bite, folks stroll downstairs to the secluded outdoor patio to ease muscle aches in the pleasantly roiling waters of the jacuzzi spa. Guests round out their island excursion with a meal at El Galleon, where scents of sumptuous luau pork barbecue ribs ($12.95) and Chesapeake littleneck clams ($16.95) blow freely through exposed entranceways and the windswept collars of family men in fedoras.
