The HGO, now in its 55th season, lit a match under this town’s oil-soaked social scene with Salome in the '50s, and the subsequent fire still rages. Based in the conveniently downtown Wortham Center, the HGO is equally adept at delivering both the epic Wagnerian earthquake of Lohengrin and the sweet, bawdy lilt of the The Elixir of Love. Now it brings its barrel chests and heaving bosoms to a Victorian ghost story.
The indomitable British composer Benjamin Britten wrote the uncanny and creepy The Turn of the Screw in a feverish four months in 1954. Based on the haunting Henry James novella, The Turn of the Screw sings the story of an isolated English governess wresting with an evil spirit for the souls of two young children in her charge. How far will she go to protect them? What sacrifice will she have to make? Is the ghost real, or only in her head? It’s kind of like The Shining, but without the blood floods and Jack Nicholson belting out “Bring me a meatloaf! A good meatloaf!” in soprano.
Orchestra seats put you close enough to the violinist to see her strings tremble as she holds the notes from the show’s taught and frightening theme. From here, it’s easy to see the subtler expressions of woe and pathos in the faces of the performers on the 17,000-square-foot stage. Before the show, wander the soaring music hall and admire the eerie, 21-foot-long John Biggers mural, or strike up a romance with an oil heir or heiress and set yourself up for life.
