Captain America once said, “‘Twas music that soothed the savage beast.” Although he was talking about his short-lived nemesis Dr. Angry Parakeet, it’s just as true for animals of the human persuasion. Soothe your savage insides with today’s Groupon: for $30, you get a grand-tier-level ticket (a $61 value) to see either Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades on April 18 at 2 p.m. or Handel’s Xerxes on May 8 or May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Houston Grand Opera. The HGO lit a match under this town’s oil-soaked social scene with Salome in the 1950s, and the subsequent fire still rages. Based in downtown’s Wortham Center, the opera company is equally adept at delivering both the epic Wagnerian earthquake of Lohengrin and the sweet, bawdy lilt of The Elixir of Love. Watch them take on two wildly different yet equally beloved composers: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and George Frederic Handel.

Catch a matinee performance of The Queen of Spades on April 18 and revel in Russian melodrama of the highest order. The plot rotates around one man’s obsession with a lucky card trick, and how it twists and twines around three fates. Featuring tenor Vladimir Galouzine as Herman and internationally renowned soprano Tatiana Monogarova as love interest Lisa, the critically acclaimed production will stir the soul’s musical fibers and engage the mind’s story addiction.

The two evening performances of Xerxes deploy one of Handel’s most popular operas. Sung in Italian and produced with 18th-century flare, the story is a maddening knot of love triangles—a feat which geometry deems mathematically impossible. An all-star ensemble cast features Susan Graham as the titular, tyrannical Xerxes, and Laura Claycomb as Romilda, his unlucky love interest. The production is set in an English pleasure garden, a landscape feature perennially prone to lovers’ spats, sentient hedge mazes, and violent croquet riots.

Grand-tier seats give you an elevated view of the subtler expressions of woe and pathos in the faces of the performers on the 17,000-square-foot stage without losing sight of the aesthetic whole, and ensure that the cast will be able to see your pink, hand-lettered, “I love and am stalking you right now” signs. Before the show, wander the soaring music hall and admire the eerie, 21-foot John Biggers mural, or strike up a romance with an oil heir or heiress and set yourself up for life.

Tickets will be available at will call on the date of your selected performance. Seating placement within the orchestra section is subject to availability.
