As scientists frantically try to synthesize hot Latin music into anti-depressant form, today's Groupon gets you the next best cure for the winter blues. For $17, you score a single-day admission (a $25 value) to the Seventh Annual Houston Salsa Congress, a weekend of evening activities developed by Houston Salsa Dancers, Inc., a nonprofit organization devoted to introducing young people to a new culture by teaching them how to salsa dance. Your Groupon will get you access to the evening's entertainment on either Friday, January 15; Saturday, January 16; or Sunday, January 17. (Present your Groupon at the admissions table on your preferred date.)
The performances on January 15, 16, and 17 will begin at 9 p.m. at the University of Houston's Houston Room in University Center (doors open at 8 p.m.). All will include a multitude of different Latin dance performances from a variety of styles, genres, and instructors. Check the full performance schedule for your preferred day.
Much like the real Congress, only with more hip-shaking and a more complicated cloture and veto process, the Houston Salsa Congress delegates are champion salsa-shakers representing New York (Yamulee), Chicago (Leah Patterson & Amanda Cardona), San Francisco (Salsamania), Canada (SaltiMambo), and Puerto Rico (Youngblood, Christian & Jackie), and all points in between, including Houston's hottest steppers (Troy Anthony, Jorjet Alcocer, and the Houston Salsa Dancers). They'll dazzle you with their fire and sinuous grace as they show you how salsa is truly done.
After the performances, there will be plenty of time for you to hone your own salsa skills with vivacious friends and strangers in a fun, social setting—all set to the beat and blasting trumpets of live Latin DJs.
One Yelper gives the Houston Salsa Congress five stars:
- The shows are wonderful. I enjoy watching these salsa dancers show off their routines, which they have down to an art. – jaire q.
