Hussong's Cantina Taqueria
Legend has it that Don Carlos Orozco created the first margarita on October 1941 in the original Hussong’s Cantina Taqueria in Ensenada, Mexico. Those margaritas are still poured today at Hussong’s’ US location, tucked inside the Shoppes at Mandalay Place at Mandalay Bay Hotel. The eatery makes their own 12-inch tortillas to wrap around bits of goat meat, pork, or Dorado lobster, forming an oversized burrito that Gayot calls “perfect for sharing.” The chefs also pile the meat onto towering heaps of nachos and drizzle creamy guajillo salsa over a trio of seafood enchiladas.
Inside the dining room, framed prints decorate the walls and piñatas dangle from the ceiling, safely out of reach of schoolyard bullies. On the weekends, the Rock’N’Roll Mariachis band walks around the room, playing a mix of traditional Latin songs as well as classic hits, such as “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.
