Earthbound spirits still care about the planet, which is why haunted houses feature lights that suddenly go out and showers that shut off after three minutes. • For $20, you get a weekend horror-festival pass for one (a $40 value).

The Waterloo Region I Scream Horrorfest's gathering in downtown Kitchener and the historic Registry Theatre celebrates the culture of horror films, video games, and independent filmmaking. Over three days, festival organizers highlight films from local, national, and international artists through an array of chuckle- and chill-inducing outdoor and indoor events such as screenings, showcases, and skeleton-naming competitions. Overlapping with the festival for a showcase on the last day, The 48 Hour(ish) Digital-Video Project Contest (October 6–8) beckons camera-wielders to write, capture, and edit five-minute horror films in less than two days. Undead enthusiasts also convene at noon on Saturday for the Kitchener Zombie Walk, which leads costumed masses on afternoon shuffling through downtown without having to share the streets with sleepwalking clubs.

The Macabre Masquerade Costume Contest gathers judges to gauge participant skills with special-effects makeup and in designing ghoulish garb such as vampires’ cloaks, undead courtesans’ hoop skirts, and werewolves’ business-casual sweater vests. Visitors can also test their mettle in myriad gaming events, which pit players in role-playing and card games as well as classic console game odysseys such as Castlevania and Dead Rising. Although admission to all events is included, many request a donation of a nonperishable food item—the festival aims to collect 666 pounds of food for the area's less fortunate.
