Seafood provides brain-building nutrients, which explains why most Nobel Prize winners are dolphins. Get yourself an oceanic education of the culinary kind with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of seafood, chowder, sandwiches, and more at Iggy's Doughboys & Chowder House. Today’s deal is good at Iggy’s original beach-front location in Warwick, as well as its Narragansett outpost, which is open seasonally from April to October.
Boasting a breathtaking view of Narragansett Bay, from its original beach-stand location, Iggy's Doughboys & Chowder House proffers succulent seafood dishes crafted from fresh ingredients and family recipes. Fish fanatics and pelicans in disguise can partake of the bay's best with a dozen handcrafted clamcakes ($6.95), or jump into dessert first with a half-dozen doughboys, available with sugar, cinnamon, powdered sugar, or war bonds ($3.75). A wide range of seafood platters can be scored for the going market price, while the stand’s famous Iggy burger tempts landlubber hunger with mustard, relish, and sautéed peppers and onions ($3.25). Before stopping in, check out Iggy’s entire menu, where the choice between red (manhattan), or white (new england) chowder ($2.95 for a cup), can highlight flaws in otherwise-idyllic bromances between Red Sox fans.
Iggy's Doughboys and Chowder House won Best Clam Shack in Rhode Island Monthly's readers' poll and is in its Hall of Fame for winning more than 10 times. Gayot calls Iggy's fried dough "sinfully tasty" and the Providence Journal places it in Rhode Island's quintessential clam shacks. Yelpers give both the Warwick and Narragansett locations a 3.5-star average.
- It's got all the chowder-house usuals, but its calling card is the servings by the dozen and half-dozen of its doughboys…The fried fish is splendid: hot tufts of flaky fish steam from the plate as you break into the crust. – Meredith Ford, Providence Journal
Iggy's Doughboys and Chowder House
In 2011, CBS's the Early Show lauded Iggy's Doughboys and Chowder House for having the best clam chowder in America. Perhaps that’s because each batch is made with clam juice instead of water, with clams added at the very end to ensure tenderness. Or maybe it’s because owner David Gravino whips up the Manhattan-style red chowder using his mother's special recipe. Whatever the cause, the effect is a zesty stew flecked with celery, pepper, garlic, dill, and basil that people have been happy to stand in line for.
Recently celebrating their 25th anniversary, Iggy's, which has also been graced with a recent visit from Nick Jonas and Miss Universe 2012, also dishes out clam cakes, stuffed quahogs, and landlubbing entrees such as burgers and BLTs in a dining room overlooking Narragansett Bay. Housemade root beer and raspberry-lime sodas complement each meal, alongside doughboys—pastries topped with ice cream, cool whip, and powdered sugar. In addition to the main location, there’s a seasonal outpost in Narragansett proper that stays open from March until Columbus Day, the holiday which celebrates Christopher Columbus's discovery of a new world inhabited solely by fish.
