The comic book is an embrace of visual storytelling, as richly complex and psychologically layered as the literary stylings of Faulkner and Clancy. Today's Groupon honors the simple joys and scholarly validity of comic books with $12 worth of comic-store goodies for $5 from Illusive Comics and Games in Santa Clara. One of the largest comic shops in the Bay area, Illusive carries trading cards, games, and a wealth of popular and independent titles, from Superman to Pretty Good Fella.
Reading between the lines of a novel is no different from reading between the speech bubbles of a comic, aside from the latter's inclusion of bulging quadriceps and glittering onomatopoeia. Illusive Comics and Games is a family-friendly comic shop with publications for all ages, carrying classic superheroes as well as a plethora of new characters dot-grained in shiny new inks (most comics range from $2.99–$3.99). A 2,000-square-foot floor of goods stocks all of the Wednesday comic deliveries from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and more, alongside graphic novels from Spiegelman to Ware and trading cards such as Magic the Gathering and World of Warcraft.
Illusive Comics and Games is staffed by passionate and helpful workers who are happy to help you find what you're after or place a special order to pursue more elusive publications. Dogs are welcome as well, so you can blame your comic-book fandom on your canine's newfound ability to read.
- I am not an avid comic collector, but I love Illusive. I tend to pop in, doe-like, and browse a bit before asking an employee a question if I have one. They're always happy to point out the items I can't find. In the event that they don't have whatever it is, they'll offer to call other stores or order it for me. Anna, the owner, is very friendly, quirky, and knowledgeable. – Sarah, Facebook
