Comedy—like Helios's chariot—has its roots in ancient Greece, brings light and warmth to the world, and can prove hazardous to one's health with an amateur at the helm. Instead, let the pros damage your funny bone irrevocably with today's Groupon: for $35, you get a ticket to The Second City comedy troupe, presented by Improv Asylum. Tickets for the shows are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited amount of orchestra seats (a $60–$65 value, plus a $4.25 ticket-processing fee) are available per show; when those seats have been taken, remaining customers will receive mezzanine seating (a $50–$55 value, plus a $4.25 ticket-processing fee). The show is recommended for mature audiences.
With alumni that include Bill Murray, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Carrell, The Second City has been amassing its army of devastatingly funny superhumans and funny-but-not-ha-ha-funny cyborgs from its Chicago headquarters since its founding in 1959. Now it sets its satirical sights on the 21st City (according to recent population counts) and the First City (according to every other measure), Boston. But don't expect the tired old "pahk the cah" jokes your cousins in Waupaca, Wisconsin, love to break out every time they visit. This one-of-a-kind, limited-run show will have you laughing at lovingly localized humor and chuckling knowingly at sharp jabs to all things Bostonian performed by a crackpot cast of writers/performers. And unlike many big-name comedians, the fabled troupe of funnymen and funnywomen won't become all earnest and mawkish late in the show in a misguided attempt to garner Oscars.
The Second City will be appearing at the luxurious Virginia Wimberly Theatre at Calderwood Pavilion, programmed in conjunction with the Boston Center for the Arts. Pick up your tickets at the theater's box office anytime after Saturday, April 17, 2010. Tickets must be picked up at least 45 minutes before the performance; otherwise, they will be released into the wild to fend for themselves.
