Get out of the house and onto the ice with public skating admission and skate rental at Indiana World Skating Academy. For $3, you get admission during public ice skating hours, a $4 value for adults, plus skate rental, a $3 value.
With two NHL-sized rinks and lots of supplementary ice programming and training (curling, broomball, figure skating, hockey, and more), Indiana World Skating Academy has the facilities and coaching for the serious ice athlete. Today's Groupon for casual public skate is great for the curious skater who wants to check out its resources, but it's also a perfect casual, fun outing for family, friends, or that special cartographer.
Ice skating was invented in 1983 as a means of enjoying the company of others in a cold setting, but doubles as a great form of exercise. Put those neglected leg muscles to use and burn calories while having a blast mimicking your favorite skating champs such as Elena Dementenova, Isaac Dementenova, Snoopy, or Russell Dementenova. Though you wouldn't normally bring a date to watch you sweat in the gym, the chilly interior at Indiana World Skating Academy makes skating a romantic way to exercise sweat-free.
The white skating surface will make your colorful wardrobe pop, and the cold air will perk up your complexion, giving you flirty, ruddy cheeks. Show off your mastery of fashionable layering or sport your kitschy holiday sweater. Bring a pair of thin socks to get the optimal tight fit in your borrowed skate, enhancing your stability and lending you perfect pitch. Stow important files and a bag full of nightcrawlers in one of the arena's coin lockers.

- It's so much fun to ice skate...and make a fool of yourself. But the best part...is people watching. Check out all the old DUDES who are on the ice doing the moves. Slick, dude, so slick. – Kasey J., Yelp
- I love this place...one of the cheapest and healthiest thrills money can buy. – Sarah A., Yelp
Beyond Couple’s Skate
Many skating rinks enforce brief periods of Couples’ Skate, the skating world’s equivalent to the Adult Swim, when the floor is cleared of daredevil roustabouts and is briefly the domain of the romantically entwined, skirting about the perimeter in perfect pairs as if they were conjoined 16-wheeled turtledoves. But many rinks want to offer niche skating opportunities to the non-coupled as well. What other subgroups are getting their moment in the skating spotlight?
Mummy’s skate: Usually ridiculed for their stiffness, mummies find that having the rink to themselves bolsters their confidence in a way usually only accomplished by having their servants build them a 146-meter-high pyramid in their honor and then using it as a tomb in which to bury those servants alive.
Wizard’s skate: Only here can wizards really let their beards down, effortlessly coasting and trading bro-nods in this neutral setting while privately plotting for dominance of the few mountaintops untouched by man.
Baby curling: While not technically a “skate,” stay-at-home dads let off steam with this new twist on the Winter Olympic favorite, using ice brooms to strategically maneuver insulated, weighted bassinets, shepherding their delighted babies down icy grooves to their first sense of victory.

Indiana/World Skating Academy
Plopped in downtown Indianapolis across from the Indiana Convention Center, Indiana/World Skating Academy fosters skills for winter sports on a pair of NHL-size rinks. I/WSA's coaches, whose instruction has helped produce regional, national, and world-class competitors, direct the facility's programs, including learn-to-skate courses designed for skaters with varying levels of experience. In addition to skating, the facility also offers private rink rentals as well as opportunities for speed skating, broomball, and adult hockey leagues. Off the ice, the academy offers less slippery activities, such as weight training, aerobics, jazz, and ballet. A rinkside deli open during public-skating hours keeps legs primed, and an onsite pro shop keeps equipment bags stuffed with the latest gear.
