Indianapolis Motor Speedway officially opened in June 1909, when you could get a gallon of gas for six cents and the average price of a new car was $1,280. Plenty changed in the decades to follow, but the speedway entrenched itself as an iconic site, with its Indianapolis 500 becoming the world's most famous race, annually billed as "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." Many of the artifacts and moments that make IMS a landmark are preserved at the Hall of Fame Museum located at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Here are a few things to know:

• The museum opened in 1956: At that time, it primarily displayed race vehicles and memorabilia tied to the Indianapolis 500. Today, the collection spans cars from many series, including NASCAR, Formula One, Sprint, and even motorcycles.
• Around 75 vehicles are on display at a time: Those include a "Vehicle of the Month," current and rotating exhibits, and a selection of other rides, including American race cars, European race cars, and even passenger vehicles.
• Indy 500 winners steal the spotlight: The museum possesses the winning cars of 38 Indianapolis 500 races, highlighted by the Duesenberg #12—the only car to ever win both the French Grand Prix (in 1921) the Indy 500 (in 1922).
• May is a popular month: Approximately one quarter of the museum's 135,000 annual visitors cruise through during May, the same month as the Indy 500.
• There's more than just cars: The collection also features trophies from all over the world, including the Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500. On February 19, 2016, the museum will open the "Team Penske 50th Anniversary Exhibition, presented by Pennzoil," which will run through November 2016.
