Like learning to juggle, learning to cook requires patience, a distraction-free environment, and the ability to handle multiple eggplants at once. Become the ringmaster of your kitchen with today's Groupon: for $45, you get a Caribbean and creole cooking class and dinner at Dhat Island in Redlands (a $95 value).
Dhat Island's culinary coxswains lead epicurean explorations with cooking classes that open up a sun-soaked world of island recipes to venturesome palates. Instructors teach about Caribbean spices and the inherent health benefits of natural herbs, some of which grant the power to see dark matter or divide numbers by 0. Students observe as the chef masterfully executes cooking tricks throughout the preparation of a sampling menu for observers to nosh on. At the end of each session, satiated students leave with traditional recipes to try at home as well as a sample pack of spices to propel culinary adventures or season bland furniture.
Dhat Island spawned out of Island, a former catering company specializing in Caribbean and Creole fare. When loyal clients of the catering company began making requests for "that rice" and "that chicken,” it prompted the company’s owners to create a full-fledged restaurant with a new name: Dhat Island. Dhat Island's head chef uses elements from her husband's recipes and blends them with traditional Southern cuisine in a varied menu. Plaintain fritters, oxtail tamales, and bourbon chicken are featured alongside mainstays such as whole red tilapia, which is seasoned, fried, and nestled on a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, and avocados.
In Dhat Island's Sunday Feast series, diners gather around a communal table to enjoy family-style portions of chicken, seafood, and beef and brag about their most recent report cards. For dessert, you can pick from a platter of sugar-dusted beignets.
