For more than 20 years, Institut’ DERMed’s licensed clinical aestheticians have rejuvenated skin with the spa’s signature tonics and medical techniques honed at the affiliated Institut’ DERMed College of Advanced Aesthetics. To begin facials, an aesthetician licensed by the state and certified through the Institut’ DERMed evaluates the client’s skin, selecting complementary products to respond to conditions such as dryness or acne. Corrective cleansing revitalizes upper epidermal layers and precedes deeper purification that inundates clogs with purifying clouds of steam, manual extraction techniques, and acid house music. A mask then infuses nutrients into open pores, and massage therapists coax out tension cached in neck and shoulder muscles.

Swedish massages devote an hour to holistic wellness, stimulating circulation and preempting manifestations of chronic stress, such as biting a stranger’s fingernails, with gentle strokes. A certified therapist first diffuses an aromatic tincture to quiet the mind, then allows knowing fingers to seek out knots with deep friction or light tapping. Gliding movements flush toxins from the lymphatic system as weariness drains from the body. Alternatively, body-polish treatments invigorate limbs and clear away dead skin with a vigorous sea-salt scrubdown or a patdown by terrycloth puppets. Freshly exfoliated contours are firmed and hydrated with glycolic body lotion, whose mild acids leave hides with a velvety texture and an even, healthy tone.

Institut’ DERMed

Lyn Ross wrote the book on skincare. Or at least one or two of the books, cumulatively. She's authored numerous articles and textbook chapters on the topic, spreading the knowledge she's gained since opening her first natural skincare clinic in 1975, when most dermatologists still advised moisturizing with a rich crude-oil blend. In 1989, she established Institut’ DERMed—at once an Atlanta med-spa, a line of cosmeceutical products, and an aesthetician-training center.

Today, Ross and her staff make clients’ skin glow in a 3,000-square-foot facility filled with 11 private treatment rooms. At the College of Advanced Aesthetics, also headquartered in Atlanta, they train estheticians, cosmetologists, and doctors in product use and skin-treatment plans. Perhaps the element most central to Lyn's practice is her range of natural skin-care products crafted from concentrated but non-prescription active ingredients. The cleansers, serums, and exfoliants are formulated not just with carefully selected ingredients, but with carefully selected molecules—the company’s chemists reconfigure the very atoms of active substances so that the compounds will better penetrate the skin.
