Like Mike Tyson, wine is usually robust, is often boxed, and should never influence tattooing decisions. Imbibe the spirit of a champion with today’s Groupon to the International Wine Tasting, part of the International Festival hosted by the City of Southfield; the tasting is Friday, October 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Southfield Pavilion. Choose between the following options:
- For $20, you get admission for two (a $40 value)
- For $35, you get admission for four (an $80 value)
The City of Southfield’s International Festival kicks off its three-day event with a tasting of 10–12 globe-spanning wines that engage patrons’ hidden oenophile while raising funds to benefit the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit. Well-traveled whites and reds hail from around the world, and sommeliers are on hand to draw attention to subtle undertones while making pairing suggestions. In between swills, mouths can tongue juggle hors d’oeuvres as a soft-jazz trio performs lilting tunes that drift amiably into ears. Vino dispensary Vintage Village will sell featured varieties from the sampling so that guests can, like a misguided alligator wrestler trying to build courage, drink each wine by the bottle.
City of Southfield
The City of Southfield Parks & Recreation department helps the community’s citizens stay active year-round by maintaining a network of both indoor and outdoor facilities. At the Beech Woods Recreation Center, more than 17,000 square feet of gymnasium space host youths playing pick-up basketball, aerobics classes working off extra inches, and tennis players honing their fly-swatting skills. Outside, the Southfield Sports Arena boasts a 120-foot waterslide, and flower gardens perfume weddings and concerts held at Burgh Historical Park's gazebo. In the winter months, an ice-skating rink offers open skate hours and drop-in hockey activities.
