What You'll Get
Of all the things you could tickle, the ivories are definitely the classiest. Learn some sophisticated plinking and plunking with today’s Groupon: for $60, you get two months of group piano lessons at the International Studio of Music in Round Rock (a $120 value). During the course of the two months, you'll get eight hour-long adult piano lessons, plus the included textbook.
Instructor and owner Lillian Simmons combines a love of music with classical training to ensure her students have fun learning to vibrate the air in mostly pleasant ways. Subscribing to the music-instruction approach of recreational music-making, International Studio’s fun-focused philosophy does not try to turn all students into stuffy yet technically proficient masters. Instead, it aims to help them incorporate music into their lives and enjoy the process of making melodies. International Studio has two levels of instruction: beginners' courses for first-time tinkers with absolutely no previous piano training and a ramped-up regimen of advanced courses for anyone with previous 88-keyed dalliances.
Shy beginners who can’t speak piano will be surprised at the ease of learning a new skill, as rusty-knuckled vets get back in the game, eventually putting the old dueling piano band back together to bank off corporate holiday parties. International Studio's one-hour adult classes meet once a week for eight weeks, with beginners' courses on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday at 3 p.m. Advanced courses take place Monday at 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 7:45 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m. Classes begin the week of April 4, 2011.
A member of the Music Teachers National Association, the Cuban-born Simmons studied key depression at the International Conservatory of Music and the Raisa Olivé Musical Institute in Havana. Believing music is the language that unifies humankind, she graciously extends her loving fluency, along with all of its nuances that enrich the human experience and encourage forgiveness of Jerry Lee Lewis for marrying his pompadour.
