Muscle weighs more than fat, making retired bodybuilders nature’s best paperweights. Get buff and avoid scattered utility bills with today’s Groupon to CrossFit Iron Mary’s (formerly Iron Fitness Club) in Lexington. Choose between the following options:

  • For $29, you get five Kettlebell classes (a $100 value).
  • For $89, you get a three-hour CrossFit orientation (a $199 value).</p>

CrossFit Iron Mary’s instructors whip bodies into shape by teaching high-intensity, strengthening exercises. Kettlebell classes arm students with handled weights designed to pull away from the body, forcing the core to stabilize throughout a workout. Each of the classes, held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m., covers basic kettlebelling through demonstrations, progressions, and a brief history of the kettlebell, which originated as a neck weight for bodybuilding cows.

Three-hour CrossFit orientations introduce exercisers to the high-intensity conditioning program used to help police officers, martial artists, and soldiers get into prime shape. The introductory session shows fledgling practitioners proper technique for CrossFit’s signature moves, including squats, heavy lifting, stairs, and doing squats up a staircase while carrying bagfuls of Milton Friedman books. Trainers also promote internal health by sharing meal-planning tips, and a fitness assessment supplies a baseline from which to chart future CrossFit progress. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m., and CrossFit Iron Mary’s caps attendance at 12 students or mannequins wearing headbands per class, the ideal size to ensure ample instructor attention.
