Dubbed an “exuberant” and “deliciously modern … Restoration romp” by Time Out, The Beaux’ Stratagem is an entertaining British romcom broadcast to the Irvine Barclay from the stage of the National Theatre in London. The beaux in question are a pair of young men brought low by indulging in London’s high life. So they escape to the countryside to find a pair of wealthy women to marry. But a host of complications ensue, including actually falling in love. George Farquhar’s clever commentary on British society was first produced in London in 1707 and was updated by Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor) from a draft by Thornton Wilder in 2006.
