Based around the craftsmanship and musical philosophy of famed luthier Dr. Carleen Hutchins, the Hutchins Consort utilizes eight scaled violins that range from the tiny treble violin (an octave above the standard violin) to the gigantic large bass violin, which is tuned an octave lower than a cello. In Springtime for Schmendrix at the Irvine Barclay Theatre, the Hutchins Consort joins outlaw klezmer group Jimmy's Schmendrix for a celebration of the season featuring traditional Jewish klezmer music, klezmer covers of popular works, and classical selections including Vivaldi's "Spring" from The Four Seasons and Lily Boulanger's D'un Matin du Printemps.
