Before ocean surfing, thrill seekers were forced to sneak onto the stage at rock concerts before leaping board-first onto waves of angry humans. Learn to ride waves that can’t punch you in the head in retaliation with today's Groupon: for $40, you get a two-hour, semi-private surf lesson from Islands Surf Camp (an $80 value). Catch the gently-extreme waves at five locations throughout San Diego, Malibu, Oxnard, Santa Monica, and the Palisades.
During the two-hour group lesson, you and three other surf-students will learn the basics of surfing in one-on-one tutelage from an Islands Surf Camp instructor. Each of Islands' wave-whisperers has a minimum of five years teaching experience, and all are certified in first aid and CPR for children, adults, and practice dummies. The first 30 minutes of the lesson is spent on the beach, practicing pop-ups and other basic techniques, with the remaining 90 minutes of the lesson spent in the water, applying these new skills as you judge the waves and safely surf the spray. A surfboard and a wetsuit are provided for the lesson. By lesson's end, you'll be ready to whisper sweet nothings to the sea, or even infiltrate a highly-secretive group of bank-robbing, skydiving surfers.
Until June 21, lessons are available 10 a.m.–12 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays. In the middle of the summer (June 21–Aug. 27), classes occur at various times everyday of the week. It's back to weekend mornings only from Aug. 28–Oct. 3, after which the Beast returns to its ancestral waters and lessons are unavailable.
Must schedule appointment ahead of time. Not valid at Long Beach, Dockweiler, and Redondo Beach locations.

About Islands Surf Camp
Professional, award-winning surfers and lifeguards comprise the team of instructors that equips students with gear and sends them paddling into the ocean. To ensure safety and capitalize on ideal waves, the seasoned athletes check ocean conditions and Poseidon's mood before taking groups or individuals out to sea. As beginners become proficient at catching waves, the instructors level up their curriculum and teach intermediate or advanced feats. Islands Surf Camp stays active in its community by donating time and gear to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, SURF, and Echo Malibu.
