Groupon Salutes Black History Month

A Conversation with Emmanuel Abidemi, Managing Partner of Iyanze and Bolat African Cuisine

Why is Black History Month important to you?
It’s a great opportunity to celebrate all the positive contributions that blacks have made and continue to make in…this nation.

What inspires you to run this business?
We want to own our story and share our culture, food, and story with the world as we know it happens.

What does being a black business owner mean to you?
Self-sufficiency, being a positive role model. Telling a different story about blacks and what we do in this country.

What makes your business stand out from the competition?
Our culinary region helps us stand out from the crowd, and our venues are a bold departure from most typical African restaurants. So we put a lot of pride into what we do and how we do it.

What’s the most popular item on the menu?
Pretty much every food item we sell is something that we specialize in. We are African, and most of our cooking staff are Africans, so they have had a lifetime of training.

What keeps customers coming back?
The home-cooked quality of our food and quality ingredients keeps our core customers coming back. The novel nature of what we serve always brings new customers in, and the great taste and the service brings them back.
