In the Jacksonville Center for the Arts’ renovated barn, locals discover new forms of expression and meet with muses through exhibitions, classes, and showcases that revel in the region’s rural heritage. Glass-making classes convene in the Jax studio, where instructors teach protégés to manipulate liquid glass and inspire listless sand with rousing speeches. Kaleidoscopic beads take shape in four-hour workshops, during which students familiarize themselves with various melting media and attend to delicate soft glass and protect it from challenges by rowdy chisels. Studio staff provides all materials, including the glass and fuel for firing.

In ceramics classes, pupils learn to center and form earthenware vessels on a potter’s wheel or roll and mold it into slab creations. Budding artisans craft mugs, plates, or busts of Paul Bunyan and select their two favorite pieces for glazing and firing by studio managers. Ceramics apprentices receive their finished pottery in four to eight weeks, and Jacksonville Arts Center can ship finished pieces to participants outside the Floyd area for an additional fee.

Members take advantage of discounts on class tuition or freely stroll through exhibits in the Hayloft Gallery and the rotating Breezeway Gallery. The soaring climate-controlled Hayloft Gallery fills the barn’s upper level, showcasing themed exhibits by local artists and annual youth displays under arched ceilings, which prevent creative concepts from escaping. Members mingle at annual dinners or win the favor of neighborhood art critics by tapping into reduced prices in the gift shop’s menagerie of handmade metalwork, books, prints, soaps, and wearable art, all crafted by local artisans.
