The majority of monolingual Americans are often bitterly disappointed when they find that René Magritte's Ceci n'est pas une cheeseburger is not a cheeseburger. Forget all about it and lose yourself bite by bite with today's Groupon to Jake's: for $10, you get $20 worth of monolithic burgers and towering drinks at the hunger-quelling hangout in Pasadena.
For the past 62 years, Jake's menu has kept it simple. A basic burger starts at $6, with a vast array of ways of dress it for any occasion, whether it's prom, a presidential inauguration, or just a little get-together between your tongue and teeth. Sandwich a burger between four types of bun before requesting a swiss or blue cheese blankey ($0.99 each). Stack the pile further with freebies such as sautéed onions, pico de gallo, pickles, or top tier toppers like bacon, guacamole, pineapple, and more ($0.99). Diners can also get all Pac-Man on a ready-to-roll burger such as the barbecue, the teriyaki, or the chili slathered (all $8). Meat-free munchers can hang a fang on a veggie burger foundation, while beefless biters can snag a patty of chicken or turkey. Saddle any order with a pile of fries ($1.49), onion rings ($3), or buffalo wings ($9), while basking in the ambience of the throwback-style interior.
Valid for dine-in and carryout. You must order food with drink items.
- This burger blew my mind!!! The flavors melded just perfectly, the sweet and spicy, cooled by the smooth avocado. This is now my go-to burger every time I hit Jake's. – Elise Thompson, LAist
- I have been here twice in the last week and omg omg omg... SO GOOD! I like that you can choose all your toppings for the burger. The meat is so juicy and I enjoy watching them cook it in front of you. – Steph P., Yelp
- The burgers and fries are prepared right in front of you and served quickly by super-friendly staff. It is only once you venture downstairs that you discover the sweeping, upbeat billiards hall. – Alexander M., Yelp
Jake's of Pasadena
Not much has changed at Jake's of Pasadena since 1947, the year the diner first opened its doors along historic Route 66 in Old Town Pasadena. The eatery recalls Southern California's golden era of surf music, hot rods, and drive-ins through its nostalgic decor and classic diner grub. Feel free to build your own burger ($5.99+) or outsource the decision-making to the cooks by ordering one of Jake's signature menu items, such as the BBQ cheeseburger ($7.99). You can complement any sandwich with chili fries or onion rings or sip a shake while you gossip about which mailman is stealing the football team's letterman jackets. There's also a billiards room downstairs that is open nightly.
