What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Started in 1974 by world renowned and ninth-degree International Grand Master Kaicho Shunji Watanabe. With six senior instructors having 150-plus years of combined teaching experience the center offers traditional karate, self-defense, judo, and fitness training to anyone over five years old.
What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
Relax. Just be who you are. No pressure to do anything you can't. Just bring a bottle of water. Not only will you notice a boast in confidence, we are sure it will be a lot of fun for you.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Kaicho Shunji Watanabe came to North America in 1967 to demonstrate Shorinjiryu karate at the Montreal Expo. He was requested to help develop Shorinjiryu Karate-do in the USA and Canada. He made his home in Owings Mills, Maryland, and started Japan Karate Center, which he maintains to this day.
What do you love most about your job?
At our dojo in Owings Mills, Maryland, Kaicho Shunji Watanabe seeks to fulfill his mission of spreading the word of the spiritual Development of Individuality in Mind and Body through the study of traditional karate-do techniques and the spirit of competition as the way to self-improvement.
