  • $45 for a three-hour daytime photography class for beginners (a $150 value). This class meets at the Japanese gardens in Hermann Park.
  • $40 for a two-hour nighttime photography class for beginners (a $150 value). This class meets at the Hard Rock Cafe to begin the evening of capturing images of night-lit downtown Houston.

In the daytime class, pupils tote their own digital point-and-shoot or DSLR cameras for a three-hour photo-taking tutorial, during which they'll fine tune compositional skills by framing shots of surrounding flowers and park-goers. They'll also learn six photo-improving strategies, such as how to frame a shot, how to shoot in manual mode, and how to convince reclusive dragons to strike poses.

Those who choose the evening session learn to capture downtown Houston’s city lights while understanding how to use the appropriate white balance, ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed. After snapping shots of the ferris wheel at the aquarium, students return to the Hard Rock Cafe for questions and camaraderie (food and drinks not included).

Jimmy Loyd Photography

Over his 25-year career in snapshottery, Jimmy Loyd has accumulated an impressive list of skills as freelance photojournalist for the Houston Chronicle, portraitist, and studio owner. An early adapter to the digital-camera revolution, he can capture digital or analog family portraits, professional headshots, and in-the-moment sports images with ease. Loyd also employs his expertise in intermittently scheduled classes and photo tours, which might occur on-location at the Houston Zoo or, for more candid shots, out in the wilderness where animals don't have access to stylists.
