What You'll Get

Unlike a sand witch, a sandwich doesn't have the power to turn men into sand and sand into poisoned glass. Let a meaty italian sandwich cast a devastating spell on hunger pains with today's Groupon: for $6, you get $12 worth of sandwiches and Italian fare at Joe Fassi Italian Sandwiches, located on the Hill.

Named St. Louis's best cheap Italian restaurant by the Riverfront Times in 2010, Joe Fassi Italian Sandwiches continues a family tradition of sausage grinding and sandwich crafting in one of the Hill's oldest Italian delis. The menu offers a plethora of modestly priced options to stretch one’s wallet and belt including signature sandwiches such as the Joe Fassi Combo with beef, ham, genoa salami, provel cheese, and special dressing ($5.95), and the Emil Fassi American Bite with ham, turkey, swiss and cheddar cheese ($5.95). Sides such as the garlic cheese bread ($3.95) and Italian staples such as the plate of pasta with Italian sausage ($7.95) or a hot meatball sandwich ($5.95) are similarly affordable, and served with friendly service instead of a stern lecture about how to carry on a dinner conversation with a closed mouth.

Managed by Tom Coll, great-grandson of original owner, Papa Paul Fassi, the shop has spent its 85-year history proudly collecting memorabilia, mementos, and technical drawings that allow patrons to travel back in time without suffering a concussion at a renaissance fair.

Joe Fassi Italian Sandwiches was covered in the Riverfront Times and Metromix St. Louis. Three Yelpers give it a 3.5-star average, and 85% of Urbanspooners recommend it.

  • The sausage itself — the recipe has been passed down through eight decades to current owner Tom Coll — is ideal: the meat tender, the flavor beautifully balanced between pork and fennel. Combined with tomato sauce on crusty bread (the No. 10), it is downright heavenly. – Riverfront Times

About Joe Fassi Sausage and Sandwich Factory

The culinary masterminds at Joe Fassi Sausage and Sandwich Factory stuff their menu with homemade meatballs and sausages that caught the hungry editorial eye of Riverfront Times in 2010. Crafted with care and brimming with meat, more than 30 hot and cold sandwiches salute the Fassi forebears, who founded a grocery store in the storefront in 1926. Meatballs simmer in a tangy red sauce, and sausages speak of sweet and savory combos such as red wine with garlic and breakfast sherry with nutmeg. Instead of topping salads with handsome boutonnieres, guests can enhance their visual appeal with the café’s homemade Italian-style vinaigrette, available by the spoonful and by the bottle. The factory's friendly staffers also cater events with hearty boxed lunches and sandwiches that stretch up to 10 feet.
