Expand your horizons to the width of a six-foot-six dancer’s grand jete and brush up on your Shakespeare before holiday party guests hold you to academic trivia. Today’s Groupon gets you a ticket to see Lar Lubovitch’s full-length contemporary ballet adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello at the Joffrey Ballet. The dates for today’s deal are for Othello’s closing weekend, so don’t miss this chance to see Chicago-born Lubovitch’s compelling work at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. Note: To sit together, groups must buy multiple Groupons in one purchase, so call your friends and find out who’s fronting the funds for your sweet bundle of seats.

Choose from three different price levels and seating areas:

  • $72 tickets (10/24 at 2 p.m. show only) are for orchestra level rows E-R in the center, left-center, and right-center sections (a $145 value).
  • $45 tickets are for orchestra rows S-Z in center, left-center, and right-center sections; balcony one rows A-D in center, left-center, and right-center sections; and balcony one rows E-I in center section (a $95 value).
  • $35 tickets are for orchestra rows AA-LL in all sections; balcony one rows A-D in left and right sections; and balcony one rows E-I in left-center, right-center, left, and right sections (a $77 value).

Not your great-grandmother’s classical ballet, Othello invigorates classic ballet with modern dance technique. Experience the keen pinch of envy as you survey the masterful dancers dancing the tale of jealousy, passion, and betrayal. More than wishing you could fly through the air like Desdemona between the strong and capable arms of Othello, you’ll be drawn into the dramatic action by Academy-Award winner Elliot Goldenthal’s enthralling score. Even the stage setting reflects the tension and danger of Iago’s manipulative game, with scenery projected onto a set made of shattered glass. A subtly sophisticated setting for date night, the tragic tale of the Moor of Venice will make the perfect rendezvous for ballet lovers, Shakespeare enthusiasts, and sophisticates of all stripes.

Reviews

The Joffrey Ballet’s Othello is featured in the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times: > * An original American full-length ballet is exceedingly rare and almost prohibitively expensive…The ballet is something of a hybrid – and very much a collaboration. Goldenthal worked hand in hand with Lubovitch during rehearsals creating the score. – Sid Smith, Chicago Tribune > * Othello involves modern dance technique as well as ballet…Those who have watched Calmels dance for the seven years since he joined the Joffrey Ballet have witnessed the way his artistry has grown to match his height. – Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times

Yelpers and Insider Pages users give the Joffrey Ballet five stars: > * They are gifted dancers that can put on a well directed ballet that you will always remember. – Jennifer K., Insider Pages > * This wasnt my first time attending the ballet, but it was the first time I was sucked into the magic so completely. The music was incredible, the dancers amazingly graceful. It was definitely something everyone should experience. – Jennifer T., Insider Pages <div class="groupon_voice" id="voice"> <div class="groupon_voice_top">

All the World’s a Stage

Unlike the inferior arts of figure skating and pottery throwing, many ballet moves can be performed anywhere, indoors or outdoors, at Best Buy or Circuit City. When you’re practicing your pliés under The Bean, consider these other performance styles and their practical everyday uses:

  • Improv: Use your quick-thinking storytelling ability to get out of traffic tickets with fantastical tales of imminent childbirth or pursuant werewolves. Or continually adjust your cover story as you bilk an elderly widow out of her prized emerald tarantula.
  • Close-up magic: Use coin illusions and card tricks to convince children and the very sheltered that you possess the actual abilities of a sorcerer. Repeat until you have amassed enough of them to found and defend a small sovereignty.
  • Shadow puppetry: With a large enough light source, a high vantage point, and the blank wall of a skyscraper, you can convince your city that a Cloverfield has appeared on the horizon. Take advantage of the ensuing chaos by asking out Becky Loomis, before your roommate Chester wins her heart by defeating your shadow Cloverfield with his shadow Ultraman.

Great classes!

The instructor was very friendly and the class was fun.
Sarah M. · January 3, 2013
It was great! Although they did not expect a lot of people to pick up the tickets prior to the show and the line extended all the way outside and waited a long time to enter the facility. In the future it should have the option to print the tickets online
