- Falling just short of waiting at the door with the newspaper and slippers, John Allan's helpful army of female staff work hard to make you feel like a king, if not for just an hour. – Mark A., Yelp
The First Hair Cut
When we think of cavemen, we think of long hair, and for good reason: the first men’s haircut did not occur until 1983, on the set of the Tom Cruise hit, Risky Business. During a break from filming, key grip Eric Sheets, mad with rabies, grabbed a pair of scissors and cut his knee-length hair. The effect was both stunning and immediate: the rabid Sheets looked great.
The film’s stylists copied Sheets’s new look for the film’s star, and Cruise leapfrogged in popularity over long-haired movie stars like Paul Newman. Short hair, along with fingerless gloves and medieval broadswords, came to define men’s fashion. Today, long hair for men is seen most frequently among heavy-metal music fans and employees of historical reenactment villages.
