Johnson’s Backyard Garden ups the city’s intake of leafy greens with more than 60 types of homegrown, certified-organic veggies, flowers, and herbs, all cultivated from 200 fertile acres of river-bottom soils along the Colorado River in East Austin. From this single community-supported agriculture site, Johnson's all-natural crops populate Austin’s restaurants, as well as a bevy of area farmers' markets.
Veggie lovers can partake in Johnson’s home-delivery system, whereupon amicable staffers transport a crate of ripe, in-season produce to doorsteps, filled to the brim with such bounty as arrowhead cabbage, rainbow carrots, onions, fennel, japanese salad turnips, and lettuce heads. Each week’s haul varies, as Johnson's staff culls only the ripest veggies and those that keep the other crops awake at night. While the contents of the box change weekly, it typically provides a week’s worth of meals and side dishes for a family of two to four.
Prospective salad sculptors can visually digest photos of Johnson’s delivery-box contents from weeks previous, or peruse its blog for an informative look at the growing process, the people behind the produce, and a peek into the existential woes of a tomato.
